The role of vegetated coastal wetlands for marine megafauna conservation
Sievers et al. 2019 Trends in Ecology and Evolution
Habitat loss is accelerating a global extinction crisis. Conservation requires understanding links between species and habitats. Emerging research is revealing important associations between vegetated coastal wetlands and marine megafauna, such as cetaceans, sea turtles, and sharks. But these links have not been reviewed and the importance of these globally declining habitats is undervalued.

Oil spill from the Era: mangroves taking eons to recover
Connolly et al. 2020 Marine Pollution Bulletin
Mangroves are highly susceptible to oil exposure. Depending on the severity, oil exposure can result in initial defoliation and eventual recovery through to mass mortality and complete loss of habitat. Some aspects of the impact of oil on mangroves and their recovery are well studied, but the focus has been on short-term responses, and the understanding of the longer-term trajectory of mangrove recovery from oiling is very limited.

Mangroves give cause for conservation optimism, for now
Friess et al. 2020 Current Biology
Mangrove forests are found along the shorelines of more than 100 countries, and provide a wide range of ecosystem services that support the livelihoods and wellbeing of tens of millions of people. Despite their importance, loss of global mangrove area has been so substantial that twelve years ago academics warned of “a world without mangroves”. This seminal work highlighted the large historical loss of mangroves, suggesting that they had declined faster than almost any other ecosystem, including coral reefs and tropical rainforests.
